Sedation Dentistry Q & A

What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses special techniques to help patients relax so they feel less anxious about having dental care performed. Different techniques are available depending on the procedure that’s being performed as well as the anxiety level of the patient.

What types of sedation are available?

At Texas Dental, we offer three basic types of sedation:

  • conscious sedation that uses nitrous oxide (also called laughing gas) inhaled through a mask
  • oral sedation that uses pills to control anxiety and increase feelings of calmness and relaxation
  • IV sedation that uses medicines delivered to the veins through a needle placed in the arm

IV sedation is used for oral surgery procedures and all wisdom tooth extractions, and it can be used for other types of procedures as well, especially in patients with extreme dental anxiety. The effects of sedation vary depending on the technique that’s used; patients who have nitrous oxide or oral sedation will be very relaxed but still awake for their procedures, while IV sedation can enable patients to doze and have little to no memory of their treatment once it’s complete. Patients who have sedation should have someone available to drive them home following their appointments since they can feel groggy for some time afterward.

What benefits does sedation offer?

Sedation offers plenty of advantages:

  • It eliminates fear of needles.
  • It reduces or completely eliminates anxiety.
  • Patients who have IV sedation usually have no memory of their treatment.
  • Patients aren’t bothered by sounds or smells during treatment.
  • The numbing effects of local anesthetics are enhanced, so even patients who have difficulty becoming numb can have treatment without pain.
  • Sedation can enable multiple procedures to be performed in a single visit instead of being drawn out over multiple visits.

Is sedation dentistry safe?

Yes. The techniques and medications used at Texas Dental are completely safe, and our dentists are trained specifically in sedation techniques so patients can feel confident in their care throughout their procedure. Plus, patients will be able to relax following sedation so they can be monitored as the sedation wears off.
